Iron Overview
Iron is an essential trace mineral, most of which is found in the hemoglobin of red blood cells and in the myoglobin of muscle cells where it is required for oxygen and carbon dioxide transport. Some examples of food sources include: meat, fish, poultry, eggs, green leafy vegetables, lentils, almonds, avocados, raisins, whole grains and beets. Deficiencies in iron can lead to anemia, brittle and dry hair, fatigue, nervousness, pallor, hair loss and fragile bones, among other symptoms. It is important to note that iron is considered toxic if taken in access. If you feel that you may have an iron deficiency, it is best to have your blood levels monitored before beginning supplementation.
