Beta glucan is a sugar molecule, or polysaccharide, primarily used as an immunostimulant. The richest source of beta glucan is baker's yeast cell walls. (Because there is basically no yeast left in the products and they have low protein levels, it is considered hypoallergenic.) It is present in lesser amounts in mushroom extracts, barley and oats.
Beta glucan seems to stimulate white blood cells called macrophages, which boosts immune response. It also stimulates the production of immune cells. Clinical studies have shown that beta glucan may have a supportive role in healthy blood pressure, blood sugar levels, immune health and cellular health.
