Folic acid is critical to proper brain function. A new study found that people with low blood levels of this essential B vitamin are 3½ times more likely to develop dementia than people with normal levels. This isn’t the first time researchers have found a link between mental decline and low folic acid, which leads to high levels of brain-poisoning homocysteine. Other research has shown that supplementing with 800 mcg of folic acid can prevent dementia in people who have high homocysteine levels. (Durga J. et al. Getting enough B12 and B6 is just as important, since these vitamins work together to reduce homocysteine.
