If you’re a woman, and especially if you are going through menopause, the isoflavones found in soy could be your nutritional superheroes, according to a number of recent studies. Here’s what science has to say about soy’s benefits for women:

Bone Density

Isoflavone intervention significantly eases bone loss of the spine in menopausal women, according to a report in the February 2008 issue of Clinical Nutrition. And if you consume more than 90 mg per day for six months can be enough to exert beneficial effects on your bones.

Hot Flashes

Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) have found that a compound in soybeans is effective in reducing the frequency (by 52%) and severity of hot flashes in menopausal women, according to their research in the January 2008 issue of Menopause

In addition, a study published in Maturitas, found that women who had five or more hot flashes per day and took 100 mg of soy isoflavones per day experienced a significant decrease in episodes after 10 months of taking the supplement.

Weight Loss

Preliminary research out of the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggests that drinking a soy-based shake everyday lessens your chance of developing belly fat. The theory is that soy isoflavones could help regulate body fat metabolism.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Studies show that soy can have a positive impact on your health as you age. Include one to two servings of whole soy foods in your diet. Minimally processed, traditional foods like edamame, tofu, tempeh and miso are best. For additional relief from menopause symptoms take a supplement that contains soy isoflavones.

QUICK TIP: Jean Carper recommends that you eat soy, but only in moderation. Learn More
