A recent study from Great Britain shows just how powerful tai chi is for people with type 2 diabetes. Diabetics who did this traditional Chinese martial art for 12 weeks had lower blood sugar levels and significant improvements in immune function.
Tai chi has been adopted by the West for its gentle qualities, which allow people of all ages to engage in relaxing exercise that promotes deep breathing, a sense of well-being and mental clarity and improves balance, flexibility and cardiovascular function.
Strenuous exercise can depress the immune system, but moderate exercise, like tai chi (or walking) has the opposite effect, the study’s authors say.
Traditionally, tai chi is done in groups in public spaces. It’s fun and motivating to do it with others, so I often offer it on my walking vacations as an alternative to yoga. But you can also learn from DVDs. Check with your local YMCA or health clubs for classes. For an easy instructional DVD, try Dr. Keith Jeffrey’s Easy Tai Chi For Busy People.
The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Diabetes can affect many aspects of health and lead to serious complications. It is estimated that the risk of death for diabetics is double that of people without diabetes. However, new research like this is beginning to reveal the power lifestyle changes can have in helping you gain control over diabetes and your health.
