Knees and Exercise: More Good News

New research shows that exercise may actually build cartilage!

A few months ago, I wrote about a study conducted at Boston University, involving thousands of people, which showed no significant difference in the presence or degree of osteoarthritis of the knee in people who exercised regularly over a period of 10 years compared to those who did not exercise regularly.

Now, a new study conducted in Australia and reported in the October issue of Arthritis Care and Research goes one step further. It shows that regular exercise may actually protect your knees from arthritis!

Some studies in the past have shown that exercise may increase your risk of developing arthritis in that joint, making you feel as though you had to choose between heart health and arthritis-free and pain-free knees. Australian researchers thought the discrepancies might be due to poor measurement techniques. They used MRIs with their subjects, who were followed for about 10 years.

Those who exercised more had better cartilage in their knees! Increasing frequency and duration resulted in better cartilage measurements. Those who reported walking regularly at the beginning of the study were found to have a 40% reduced risk of bone marrow lesions, which can lead to osteoporosis. And that is very good news.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Osteoarthritis affects an estimated 35 million Americans after midlife. The debilitation it may cause, in its more severe forms, can be devastating. Do everything you can to prevent joint pain and preserve your quality of life. Exercise is absolutely fundemental to good health as you age, and fortunately, you can also use supplements like glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM to relieve the pain associated with joint inflammation.

QUICK TIP: You might be surprised to learn that there are ways to get your osteoarthritis symptoms under control with food and supplements. Learn More
