We’ve previously reported that diets high in omega-3-rich fish oils help thwart the build-up of brain proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease, in animal studies. (See “Fish Oils Help Keep You Sharp,” May 1, 2007.) Now, a study is underway to determine if one component of fish oil, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can slow the progression of this mind-robbing disease in humans.
The 18-month clinical trial, supported by the National Institute on Aging, will be conducted at 52 sites across the U.S. and will enroll 400 people, age 50 and older, with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
Recent U.S. and European studies have reported that people with the highest blood levels of DHA were about half as likely to develop dementia as people with lower DHA levels. That’s better than any Alzheimer’s drug currently on the market.
During this clinical trial, about 60 percent of the participants will receive two grams of DHA per day, while 40 percent will receive an inactive placebo. Tests to measure cognitive ability will be used to monitor participants’ Alzheimer’s disease progression.
With the world bracing to face the future Alzheimer’s epidemic as boomers advance in age, researchers are reporting advances in the ability to diagnosis Alzheimer’s disease earlier than ever. U.S. researchers are using computer programs that scan brain images to detect early Alzheimer’s with at least 67% accuracy, while Norwegian researchers are using blood DNA analysis to pick out Alzheimer’s with 85 percent accuracy. The earlier this disabling disease can be detected, the greater likelihood something can be done to at least delay its effects.
