Saw Palmetto’s Safety Confirmed

July 30, 2008
By Carey Rossi

If your prostate is being a pain, taking saw palmetto is a safe option for relief. According to research done in conjunction with the Saw Palmetto for Treatment of Enlarged Prostates (STEP) study, consuming saw palmetto supplements produced no adverse effects.

Researchers recruited 225 men with moderate-to-severe symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous swelling in the prostate gland. They assigned the men to receive either a daily saw palmetto supplement (320 mg per day) or placebo for one year. Overall, they found that this dose did not produce any adverse effects. The Anti-Aging Bottom Line:
50% of men over age 50 suffer from BPH. But healthy and natural remedies are available! Saw palmetto has been used for many years to support overall prostate health and a substantial amount of research has shown that this herb can improve your quality of life if you have BPH. And unlike some of the pharmaceuticals prescribed to relieve BPH syptoms, there are no known side effects or drug interactions associated with saw palmetto.

QUICK TIP: Pygeum, another well tested supplement used for prostate support has been shown to help have a positive effect on bladder function. Learn More
