I have a friend who has a hard time sleeping through the night. Is there any simple all natural remedies or products that may help her?
View Answer
There are a number of natural remedies that can be used to help a person
sleep better at night. We actually are going to be offering a product for
sleep aid in the next week or two, along with a number of new products.
All of these new items are not quite yet available, but will be very
shortly.
One product in particular that may be useful for your friend would be
melatonin. Melatonin has been helpful for a number of people to help them
get better rest at night. Taking a melatonin supplement can help to
regulate your body’s natural circadian (sleep-wake) rhythm. Many
researchers also believe that melatonin levels are related to the aging
process. For example, young children have the highest levels of nighttime
melatonin. Researchers believe these levels diminish as we age. In fact,
the decline in melatonin may explain why many older adults have disrupted
sleep patterns and tend to go to bed and wake up earlier than when they
were younger.
Here is an interesting article about another way to help improve sleep:

Why do we have to take 6 pills each day compared to the one pill some other brands offer? I have compared what is in the products, and do not see too much difference in what vitamins and minerals are included in each.
View Answer
Ideally, it would be optimal to be able to take just one pill a day that
provided our bodies with all that it needed for the day. Unfortunately,
due to the molecular structure of certain nutrients, it is not yet
possible to fit all of these nutrients at these particular dosages into
fewer pills a day. Indeed, one can find most of these nutrients in a less
pills per day multivitamin formula. However, the dosages would have to be
different in order to have them fit into fewer pills a day. When comparing
multi-vitamins, it is very important to look at the particular milligram
and IU amount of each nutrient. It will most certainly be much higher for
most nutrients, the more pills per day the serving is. This is generally
true across the board with most multi-vitamins available.
You may be interested to know that we are now offering a 2-a-day,
Multi-Nutrient Formula Basic:
http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/detail/MNB
We still highly recommend taking our original Multi-Nutrient Formulas that
are 6 a day, for the optimal anti-aging dosages of each particular
nutrient, as detailed in Jean Carper’s best-selling book Stop Aging Now.
Our Basic product is mainly intended for people who want to customer tailor
their vitamin regimen, by including a number of different nutrients,
specific to their needs, to the Multi-Nutrient Formula Basic. However, it
can also good for someone who just cannot take the full 6 a day dosage for
whatever reason.

Could you please give me the particulars on L-Theanine. How much to take? When to take? Any known side effects? What should I look for to Know the Brand is reliable etc? Do you have it in any of your products?
View Answer
L-Theanine is an amino acid
which has received rave reviews in recent studies. It is found naturally
in many teas such as green tea or the Gyokuro tea leaf. What's so amazing
about this amino acid is it's ability to cross the blood brain barrier and
offer psychoactive properties. Without mimicking drowsiness, L-Theanine
is able to promote the production of alpha waves in the brain which
produce a feeling of relaxation which helps to reduce stress. One study
even found that when coupled with caffeine, as it is naturally found in
many teas, it can even improve cognitive function (link to study:
doi:10.1016/j.biopsycho.2007.09.008 ). Additionally, an in vitro study
found that L-Theanine can increase anti-tumor activity of chemotherapy
agents such as doxorunicin and idarubicin, while at the same time
decreasing the oxidative stress on normal cells which are often caused by
these therapeutic drugs (Cancer Science,Volume 90 Issue 7, Pages 775 -
780; Published Online: 23 Aug 2005).
Research has not established an upper limit for safety due to the fact
that L-Theanine has not been known to have any side effects, however, it
has been known to be most effective if taken at 100-200 mg for stress
relief. Regarding the effects of L-Theanine as a chemotherapy adjuvant,
500-1000 mg would be the human equivalent, however, human studies have not
yet been conducted so you would want to consult with your prescribing
physician.
While, currently, Stop Aging Now does not offer any products with
L-Theanine, you can typically find reliable products at your local health
or whole food store.

During a recent check-up at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, it was suggested that I take 2000 mg. of Omega-3 fish oil capsules daily for high cholesterol. I was told that the ratio of EPA to DHA must be 5 to 1 to be effective. Is that ratio consistent with current clinical findings? Do you have a supplement that will fulfill those requirements?
View Answer
The EPA/DHA ratio is reliant upon two factors. The first one is age specific, therefore, advice will differ depending on an individual's stage of life. During brain development and infancy, levels of DHA are typically advised higher to establish optimal brain growth. As one ages, however, EPA becomes more important and the
ratio will suggest higher EPA. The other factor which determines appropriate ratio is one's desired outcome. If one is after joint health the ratio is about 4:1 (EPA/DHA). If one seeks to improve heart health (as it seems you are) the generally advised ratio is 2:1. But again, this could change depending on your age. Our Omega-T fish oil does provide the generally agreed upon ratio of 2:1.

I am a 56-year-old male and am healthy and not on any medications. I exercise and am careful about eating nutritional foods. Would you recommend taking COQ10 or alpha lipoic acid supplements to maintain optimal health?
View Answer
It is great that you have maintained good health and healthy eating habits thus far! I'm sure you're reaping the benefits of healthy decisions. Both of your suggested
supplements would provide additional support to your health. The CoQ10 does begin to naturally deplete with age, therefore, supplementing can provide great support for heart and brain, as well as your cells in general. Alpha Lipoic acid is considered to be the 'universal antioxidant'. It has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and is also soluble in both water and lipid conditions which makes it wonderful. Adding both of these things to your daily regimen would prove to be very beneficial.

I have an assortment of aches/pains/issues which my Dr. says is likely best labeled as fibromyalgia, and I wonder if I should be making a special adjustments to the Stop Aging Now products that I take, or any additions to them, to help with fibromyalgia (my Dr., of course, says "any good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement" is sufficient, so - although he seems competent in other ways - he's not much help on this issue. Suggestions?
View Answer
A fabulous
addition to your Stop Aging Now regimen would be CoQ10 which, in addition
to being a powerful antioxidant, supplies each cell’s mitochondria with
optimal amounts of CoQ10. 60-200 mg of CoQ10 a day has been known to
reduce symptoms of fibromylagia. Fibromylagia can also cause oxidation
response to tissues therefore a good antioxidant is advised such as
Vitamin E or alpha lipoic acid. Additionally, studies show that B
vitamins are very effective at reducing symptoms as well. Our
multi-nutrient vitamins contain good amounts of these three things.

Is there any chance that your Vitamin E 400/400 could lower an individual's white blood cell count?
View Answer
In matters of low white blood
cell counts, the cause is typically an underlying factor when choosing the
best approach for remedy. There have been very few studies done which
indicate that there is a correlation between white blood cell (WBC) count
and vitamin E. One study did suggest that vitamin E (primarily
alpha-tocopherol) protected lymphocyte cells against stress caused by
oxidation, and had positive effects with cell-mediated immunity (J Nutr
2000 Dec;130(12):2932-7). That study, however, doesn't indicate much in
terms of WBC counts. Regarding your question about Acytl-L-Carnitine, one
study suggested that it's use alone or in conjunction with vitamin E
reduced the lowering of thrombocytes and WBCs cause by irradiation
(Journal of Radiation Research, Vol. 47 No. 1 91-102, 2006). If you are
looking to increase your WBC count, many believe that exercise is a sound
approach in addition to increasing some nutrients such as vitamin C,
vitamin A and zinc. It is always a good
idea, however, to consult with your prescribing physician before adding or
removing nutrients from your daily regimen.

Many floaters fade over time, however, if a large amount of floaters appear suddenly, it could be a sign of retinal detachment for which you should see a doctor right away.

What product may be good for getting sparatic high blood pressure? I have stress at the office and it raises my pressure. When I get home it goes down.
View Answer
It is good that you have identified the cause of your high blood pressure
so that it may be treated appropriately. If your stress levels are high
it may be a good idea to increase Magnesium which naturally lowers stress
levels. Doing this in conjunction with a balanced diet, plenty of sleep,
and exercise such as yoga or walking should help get your blood pressure
down.

One of your latest recipes was for pork loin. Jean, however, has often pointed out that red meat is best avoided. How often can one eat red meat in a week?
View Answer
While we do recognize some of the concerns associated with
excessive red meat consumption, there is really no hard rule on how much
should be consumed in any given period of time. I would certainly advise
one take two things into consideration: moderation and quality. Many
nutrients can be obtained from red meat such as B-12, iron and CLA,
however, in excess of any one food could lead to deprivation of other
which also offer a wide range of nutrients. It is just as important to
look at the quality of red meat consumed. For example, it is best to opt
for meats which are organic and made with no growth hormones or
antibiotics. Additionally, you can consume red meat which has less fat
such as filet mignon or ground beef that is only 7% fat versus 20% fat.
Pork Loin is a tricky one because it is technically not red or white meat
although many feel it is much close to white meat and it has lately
acquired the name 'the other white meat.' It is, however, rather low in
saturated fat and an excelent source of protein.

what should a 60 year old woman take to stay healthy mentally and physically?
View Answer
While supplementing tends to be very 'need specific' advice, there are products which offer a wide range of general health benefits. I would recommend the power pack which
offers one of the Multi-Nutrient formulas as well as Omega-T fish oil and Green Tea Extract. Together, these three products offer a truly amazing range of support for the heart and brain in addition to having incredible antioxidant properties. I have always read that you should take 50 mcg of selenium with the Vitamin E to work at its best. Do you have the selenium in your formula?
View Answer
While vitamin E and selenium do have a very synergistic relationship, they still work quite well independently. Our 400/400 vitamin E capsules do not contain selenium, however, because they are formulated specially to offer all 8 members of the vitamin E family in a way which you would find it in it's most natural state. If you're looking for the advantages that can be found from the E/selenium combination, try our Multi-Nutrient formula which offers both nutrients.

In one of her books, Ms. Carper suggests that one look for "licorice mass" to get certain vitamins. I'm having difficulty finding it. Are there any brands that your department is aware of that sell real licorice mass?
View Answer
Licorice, also known as the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, can be a great source of nutrients to assist with digestion as well as to ease a cough. You can typically find
pure licorice or licorice supplements at health food stores such as Whole Foods Market. You can also order pure licorice candy pieces from a company called Licorice International. Their website is: http://www.licoriceinternational.com/store/cart.php?cat=Italian+Licorice.

I have read that Vitamin E in excess is toxic. Is this correct?
View Answer
The upper safe limits for vitamin E vary greatly among authorities. The generally agreed upon upper safe limit is 1600 IUs although it has been used therapeutically at much higher doses. Vitamin E is a fat soluble nutrient which is stored in the liver, however, because it is so easily utilized by the body, it rarely reaches the toxic effects that are seen with other fat solubles such as vitamin A. It is a safe measure to consult your prescribing physician before taking a new nutrient if you have further concerns.

l currently take your multi vit. and Glucosamine MSM and Fish oil, are those good for muscle and tendon support too or is there some other supplement that would be better.
View Answer
It is commonly known that eating adequate amounts of protein is vital to
muscle health. There are also other key nutrients that are important to
helping maintain muscle and tendon health.
Actually, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have been shown to help
preserve muscle health. Researchers believe that it is the
anti-inflammatory properties of the omega-3 fatty acids that help to
conserve muscle strength. Read more about fish and muscle health here:

Other key nutrients for muscle health include calcium, magnesium and
vitamin D. All of these nutrients are included in our Multi-Nutrient
Formulas, along with many other vitamins, minerals and anti-inflammatory
herbs that are beneficial for many aspects of health, including helping to
support muscle and tendon health. Click here to read more about our

I would like to know how to identify good carbs and bad carbs.
View Answer
Good carbs are considered to be carbohydrates that are slower digesting.
They can help to keep your blood sugar level balanced since they are higher in
fiber. The fiber content causes you also to feel fuller longer. Complex
carbs (or good carbs) tend to also be higher in nutritional value,
containing more vitamins and minerals than more refined carbs. The best
source of complex carbohydrates is from fresh vegetables. Fresh fruits and
whole grains are also great sources. When purchasing prepared foods labeled
“whole grains” keep in mind that the regulation surrounding the label
claims on whole grain foods is weak. Any food with whole grains added to
it can be labeled as a “whole grain” product. Be sure to read the
labels carefully. If “enriched” is in the first ingredient, chances
are likely, it is not a completely whole grain product. Look for the word
“whole” in the first ingredient to assure it is indeed a good whole
grain food. Even look for “sprouted grain” products in your local
health food store. Sprouted grains are denser, and usually contain more
nutrients and fiber.
Bad carbs are processed and refined carbohydrates such as white flour,
sucrose, or table sugar. Dessert items, sugary drinks are usually where
the finger is pointed. Also be aware of flour products that do not contain
whole grains. White breads and pastas are some of the foods to try and
avoid. White flour products can cause a spike in blood sugar levels.
Luckily, there are a number of healthier options available to help you
avoid some of these “bad carbs.” Be sure to include a lot of fresh
vegetables in your diet. There are also now whole grain, complex carb
pastas and breads that actually have a nice taste. Eat these in
moderation, along with lean proteins, and fresh vegetables.

I am 69 years old and am losing my sense of taste. I read to take zinc and am taking 50mg. Any suggestions?
View Answer
There are a number of reasons why someone can lose their sense of taste.
It is best to speak with your health care practitioner to find out what
the possible cause may be.
Zinc deficiencies are indeed one of the possible causes of reduced
ability to taste and smell. Our Multi-Nutrient Formulas contain 20 mg of
zinc, along with many other vitamins and minerals to help rule out any
possible nutritional deficiencies. Read more about our Multi-Nutrient

I am 75 years old in good health but do have psoriasis of scalp & rosacea . Both are controlable. Now I find my nails with layers, ridges and splitting. I know part is due to aging, but is there something I can do to improve the health of my nails? I certainly welcome any help you might be able to give me.
View Answer
There are a number of different reasons why problems can occur with nails.
You may want to have a culture sample taken by your practitioner to ensure
that there is no fungus present, especially if you have noticed thickening
or discoloration. Once you find out for sure, there are a number of natural
methods to help clear it up. Natural methods do often require a lot of
patience since they tend to take a while to help.
It may also be a sign that your body is not absorbing nutrients
efficiently. It is important that along with your supplementation you try
to eat a very balanced diet that contains plenty of fresh water and a lot
of fresh vegetables and fruits. It is also important to make sure that you
are consuming high quality protein to help strengthen your nails. You may
also want to consider taking our Omega-T fish oil. The essential fatty
acids in fish oil are “essential” for many aspects of health,
including helping to keep hair, skin and nails healthy. You can read more
about our Omega-T Fish oil here:
http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/category/Fish+Oils
You may also want to consider adding a supplement containing MSM to your
regimen. MSM is a naturally-occurring compound found in green plants,
grains, and milk. MSM is made from dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and
contributes sulfur to some proteins. MSM is primarily used for
osteoarthritis, alone or in combination with glucosamine. Since MSM helps
to strengthen connective tissue, it also can help to strengthen hair, skin
and nails. We do carry an MSM product. It is paired with Glucosamine for
the added joint protection. You can read more about our Super Osteo-GM
(Glucosamine/MSM) here: http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/detail/OGM
B-vitamins are also essential to your nail health, especially if
undergoing a lot of stress. Stress can deplete your body of many nutrients
including the B vitamins (deficiencies may contribute to fragile nails).

Can you tell me anything about a supplement called Salba?
View Answer
Salba is a registered trademark for a particular variety chia seeds. Chia
seeds are naturally high in alpha linolenic acid or ALA, a type of omega 3
essential fatty acids. They also contain various nutrients, such as
vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber. They also contain antioxidants.
They have been attributed to promoting gastrointestinal and general
health.
Salba is a standardized product, allowing them to claim to be a
nutritionally consistent crop. When something is standardized, it usually
has also undergone clinical examination. Salba claims to have consistently
higher levels of omega-3 levels, as well as other nutrients, than chia.
Chia seeds may or may not have the same amount of nutrients, since each
crop may vary. Chia seeds themselves are very nutritious. It may be worth
the extra cost for the standardized Salba seeds as they claim to have more
nutrients, better taste and quality. If you are thinking about trying them,
I would suggest trying both and making a comparison. I have yet to use
either of them, though I have heard quite a bit about the health
benefits.

I take lisinopril, 20 mg. per day, with respect to my blood pressure. I usually take 2 150 mg. CoQ10 per day. Could you tell me if there is anything wrong about this since I understand there is an interaction between CoQ10 and lisinopril.
View Answer
CoQ10 is a natural nutrient involved in energy metabolism at the
cellular level. It has an effect on the total energy picture of the body
and the functioning of organs, especially the heart. Due to its potential
ability to lower blood pressure, coQ10 may increase the effects of
drugs that also lower blood pressure. If you decide to use CoQ10 while on a
blood pressure lowering medication, you would need to monitor that you
blood pressure does not go too low.

I am afflicted with gout and arthritis. I have read that shellfish can aggravate gout conditions. Consequently, I am considering taking your product "Super Osteo G-MSM." However, I am wondering if this product will protect and aid in the regeneration of cartilage?
View Answer
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is caused by deposits of
uric acid crystals in joints. Uric acid is formed from the breakdown of
purines, substances that can be found naturally in your body and in
certain foods, especially in shellfish, beef liver and other organ meats.
Studies have also indicated that eating large amounts of protein may
increase uric acid levels in the blood, increasing the risk of an attack
of gout.
Glucosamine is made from the outer shells of shellfish — not the
shellfish meat. Because glucosamine doesn't contain purines or proteins,
it shouldn't increase uric acid levels.
It's hard to say which Osteo product will work better for each particular
person. Some people try one for about six weeks, then try the other, and
see which one seems to work best. There is some evidence that using a
glucosamine/chondroitin product is the best combination for helping to
rebuild cartilage. Research has indicated that MSM may inhibit
degenerative changes in joints for subjects with osteoarthritis. It has
also shown to have anti-inflammatory effects.

My daughter is 11 yrs old and weighs 175 lbs. I have enrolled her in Tae Kwon Do for 1 hr a day 5 days a week. I have her on a healthy diet, salads, fruit non sweetened cereal, oatmeal little sugar and so on. Is she too young to put her on Synergy Slim to stimulate weight loss. Even with the changes which we made a few months ago has had no change on her weight. If not the pills what would you suggest?
View Answer
While SynergySlim is a safe, non-stimulant weight loss product, it has not
been evaluated for use on children. It is best to consult with your
child’s health care practitioner to see what would be best. It is also
very important to follow up with a physician especially if you have been
making changes, and are not noticing any weight loss.
It is important that your child remains physically active. Also try to
keep up with a healthy eating plan. Try to be motivating without pushing
too hard, as this can easily be discouraging. Try to limit time spent
watching TV and on the computer to less than 2 hours a day, as these
activities don’t use up many calories, and usually encourages eating
unhealthy foods and unhealthy habits. Also pay attention to the amount of
calories and sugar obtained from drinks (sodas, fruit juices, etc.).

I have read numerous articles that milk thistle is more or less shown to help with liver function. Is the reason it is not included in your vitamins that you do not think the results merit the inclusion in your products?
View Answer
A number of studies have shown that milk thistle helps protect the liver
and improve its function. It has been extensively studied since the
1970’s with the bulk of the studies concluding that milk thistle has
therapeutic effects.
We are actually getting ready to offer a number of new products, including
milk thistle, in the next upcoming month. Milk thistle is not generally
added to multi-vitamin/mineral products because it has shown to be more
effective when taken separately, sometimes recommended on an empty
stomach.

You may want to consider taking
out Multi-Nutrient Formula with Cholesterol Support. Stop Aging Now has

healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels including 300 mg of
phytosterols, 150 mg of Sytrinol™, 20 mg of policosanol and 15 mg of
tocotrienols. This formula may be ideal for you, yet you may want to
consult with your Doctor when considering taking a nutritional supplement
as an alternative to any medication.

What do you think of getting B12 shots to loose weight? I take the Multi plus gold vitamens. Would it hurt to get the B12 shot on top of it? And where would you suggest to go to get a B12 shot?
View Answer
There have been claims that B12
injections may promote weight loss, yet we are not aware of any evidence
that it works for this. B12, however, is known to produce energy and this
in turn may allow people more stamina when exercising. B12 is considered
to be very safe even if taken in large amounts. It is not likely that
taking a B12 shot in addition to the Multi-Nutrient Formula would be
considered too much. It would be wise, however, to discuss this with your
Doctor if this would be right for you.

I've been taking the Synergy Slim and Tonalin for about 6 months. I haven't lost any weight - haven't been dieting. I am concerned about excessive gas and an overabundance of bowel movements or feeling the need all the time. Should I reduce the number of pills I am taking?
View Answer
Digestive upset can happen as your body is adjusting to some of the
carbohydrate and fat blocking ingredients. If you do experience this
issue, and you feel comfortable trying this, you can lower your dosage for
a few days to allow your body time to adjust to the product. Then increase
your dosage slowly to the full amount if you feel that your body has
adjusted well.
As you know, SynergySlim works best along with a diet and exercise

Do you have a product that helps with anxiety.
View Answer
We do not have any specific products at this time for anxiety. However, it
is important to make sure that you are getting balanced nutrition. A high
potency multi-vitamin such as our Multi-Nutrient Formula is essential. You
may also want to consider our Anti-Aging PowerPaks plan ( http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/antiaging_powerpaks), as it contains,
along with a Multi-Nutrient Formula of your choice, Omega-T fish oil which
it important for brain and mood health. It also contains our
High-Antioxidant decaffeinated Green Tea Extract. When the body is under
stress, it can be more vulnerable to free radical damage. Our Green Tea
Extract is a great way to get the benefits of the antioxidant content of
three cups of green tea, but without the caffeine. It is important to
refrain from having caffeine when you suffer from anxiety.
You may want to consider taking some extra calcium and magnesium,
additionally to what is in the Multi-Nutrient formulas. They work together
to help relieve anxiety and tension. You can take them at night to help
relax your body before sleeping. We do not yet offer a separate calcium
magnesium product, but will be offering it soon along with a number of new
products.

Green tea contains caffeine. How about taking it with other supplements? Does it deplete the rest of supplements that we consume?
View Answer
Green tea generally is considered to be very
safe. It has many health benefits most notably that it is rich in
polyphenol antioxidants.
Studies of green tea interactions are limited. However, one should note
that the tannins found in green tea may affect some of the absorption of
iron. Based on preliminary studies, ingestion of green tea may lower LDL
cholesterol and may theoretically interact with cholesterol-lowering
drugs.
If you are drinking or taking supplements of green tea that are
caffeinated, there are some health concerns that one has to keep in mind.
One should note that caffeine may add to the effects and side effects of
other stimulants. Caffeine also acts as a diuretic. It increases urine and
sodium losses through the kidney, and may add to the effects of other
diuretic agents.
To get the benefits of green tea without the caffeine, you may want to
consider trying our High Anti-oxidant green tea extract. One capsule is
standardized to provide you with the same amount of potent anti-oxidants
as three cups of green tea, but without caffeine. You can read more about
our product here: http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/detail/GRT

Does drinking apple cider vinegar with water and honey leach calcium from your bones?
View Answer
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has been used for thousands of years for it
medicinal benefits. I was reported as far back as 400 B.C. by Hippocrates
for its health giving qualities. ACV is rich in enzymes and potassium,
along with many other health promoting nutrients. It is known to help keep
healthy cholesterol levels, assist with keeping a normal body weight,
along with many other health claims. There is even some evidence that this
type of vinegar even helps with the uptake of calcium from various food
sources.
If you decide to try apple cider vinegar, be sure that it is raw and

What are plant sterol enriched spreads? Please provide the name of a product in your answer.
View Answer
Plant sterols (phytosterols) are plant-based compounds that are similar in
their structure to cholesterol. Phytosterols have mainly been attributed
for their cholesterol-lowering properties. They have been shown to help
reduce cholesterol absorption in intestines. We decided for this reason to
add phytosterols to our Multi-Nutrient Formula Plus with Cholesterol
Support. You can read more about this supplement and its ingredients here:

There are now a few companies that have sell spreads that are free from
hydrogenated oils, and contain phytosterols. One good brand to try is
Earth Balance. http://www.earthbalance.net/product.html The Earth Balance
Buttery Natucal Spread is the best one to try to get the most
phytosterols.

What do you suggest for very low iron that may help? Can imbalance cause this even though no disease is indicated? May barley greens drinks help?
View Answer
It is best to ask your doctor to find out exactly how much you
should be taking to try to repair your deficiency. Most people who need
iron take about 18mg. In your case, if it is very low, you may need more.
It is important to ask your doctor exactly how much you should be taking,
as too much iron is toxic to the body. Since your levels are very low, it
is also important that you discuss with doctor the possible causing factor
for your deficiency. Poor absorption of vitamin B12 can be a factor of
having very low iron levels, but there are a number of other possible
causes. So, it is best to discuss this with your doctor.
As for barley greens, it is said that they can help to build the blood.
These claims have not been fully substantiated however, barley grass does
provide a number of different nutrients that do help to support healthy
blood, such as B vitamins, including B12, and some iron. It also contains
a powerful antioxidant enzyme called Super Oxide Dismutase (S.O.D.) that
may help protect the cells from free radical damage.

what remedy do you suggest for a young person going thru growing pains?
View Answer
There are some things that may help to relieve growing pains. Applying a heating pad and massaging the affected area may provide some relief. Regular stretching exercises may also help.
While it is very uncomfortable for your child, comfort them and remind them that it is normal, and that it will soon pass.
You should consult your child’s pediatrician if the pain is persistent or if there is swelling or redness in one particular area or joint, if your child is limping, or if the pain is still present in the morning. You should also consult a physician if you notice a fever or rash or any unusual behavior, such as loss of appetite, weakness, tiredness, etc.

Do you think farm raised salmon is a good product? I have heard pro and cons and would like your opinion.
View Answer
It is best to try to eat wild caught fish if possible. Not only does it
taste better, but it is probably better for you. While the two types have
shown to have the same amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, there are some
concerns with eating farm raised fish. Farmed salmon is fed artificial
color, may pollute the ocean and may contain more environmental toxins
called PCBs. All salmon appears to be low in potentially toxic mercury.
Almost all canned salmon is wild. Red and pink canned salmon have as much
disease-fighting omega-3 as fresh wild salmon.

I am familiar with the Juice Plus products, however have never actually
seen a full ingredient listing. The Juice Plus website, as far as I can
see, for some reason, does not provide a complete supplement facts
listing. There may be a certain overlapping of nutrients that one should
be mindful of, but it probably would be ok to take both products.

I would like to know what you thing about lithium aspartate regarding Alzheimer's disease and protecting the brain against different stresses. I would also like to ask if you think it is safe to take 5mg of Lithium aspartate while I am on a low dose of prozac, 10 mg a day.
View Answer
I would definitely advise against taking lithium with prozac or any other
antidepressant medication. Taking serotonergic antidepressants with
lithium may increase the likelihood of serotonergic side effects including
serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders such as
Call-Fleming syndrome.
Many people use lithium for helping with a number of different health
issues. You should check with reputable health care practitioner to help
further advise you.

I'm 64 and last fall noticed my hair thinning around my temples and in the middle of the top of my head. I have a gray streak in this spot also. The rest of my hair is still dark. Since we women are not supposed to take HRT any longer and I discontinued same about 5 years ago, could I be suffering from a lack of estrogen or too much testosterone? Are there any supplements to safely increase one/s estrogen?
View Answer
It may be wise to get your hormone levels tested to see what your body may
be low or high in. It sounds like the cause of your hair loss is probably
hormonal, due to where it seems to be falling out, but it is probably best
to try and find out exactly what is causing it.
There are some natural substances that help to balance hormones. Our
Multi-Nutrient Formula Plus with Menopause Support has soy isoflavones and
an herb called black Cohosh, both contain phytoestrogens, or plant
estrogen-like substances. Find our Multi-Nutrient Formula Plus with
Menopause Support here: http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/detail/MNFM

I have recently learned that I am gluten intolerant. How can I assure that I get enough fiber in my diet without the ability to eat whole wheat, barley, etc? And how much fiber should I be consuming each day?
View Answer
The daily recommendation for fiber intake is generally about 25 grams for
the standard 2,000 calorie diet. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh vegetables
and fruits as they contain fiber and other valuable nutrients. Flax seed
meal is also a wonderful source of fiber and essential fatty acids. Beans,
nuts and seeds are also good sources of fiber as well. Make sure that you
drink plenty of water when adding more fiber to your diet.

I am trying to strengthen my low back and loose weight, but 3 times in the past 1 1/2 years end up with bursitis in both hips. The treatment that reduced inflammation helps greatly. My question is, what nutrition and products would help, and why.
View Answer
There are some supplements that may provide you relief. Green drinks
containing wheat grass are great for helping to relieve inflammation.
Curcumin, which is found in our multi-nutrient formulas, helps with
inflammation:
http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/category/Multi-Vitamins
You may also want to try taking a fish oil supplement that also works as
an anti-inflammatory. Check out our high quality Omega-T fish oil:
http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/category/Fish+Oils
As for diet, it is very important to try and eat as many vegetables a day
as possible. Try to avoid processed foods, especially sugary foods and
drinks, and try to limit the amount of carbohydrates in your diet. Foods
that spike the blood sugar, tend to be pro-inflammatory, and should be
avoided. Try to drink plenty of pure water. This should also help with
weight issues.

I read with interest your last information of the value of green tea. I've also read that green tea with added vitamin C(lemon ) and/or Pomegranet juice adds to the items in the green tea that make it even more effective. I'd love your opinion.
View Answer
According to studies, the vitamin C content in lemon, may increase the
absorption of the antioxidants of green tea. Apparently it is just a
squeeze from lemons that is all that is necessary. They also found that it
is mainly citrus foods that help the most with retaining the antioxidants.
Lemons helping the most, then oranges, then grapefruits.

What can you tell me about goji berries? Do you think that everyone can safely eat them? I understand that the ORAC units have been measured at 25,000. Can this be true?
View Answer
Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, have long been a prized part of
traditional Chinese medicine. They have been used to promote immune
health, protect the liver, improve circulation and improve eyesight. They
have also recently been promoted for their high antioxidant value.
According to various sources, goji berries can have an incredible ORAC
score of up to 25,000 per 100 grams of the fruit.
Throughout the years of traditional use, goji berries have earned an
overall reputation for being safe. Most people can safely include a
moderate amount of goji berries to their diet. One should also be aware
that goji berries are thought to lower blood pressure and blood sugar. One
should probably avoid them while pregnant or breast feeding.

acytel l-carnitine and just l-carnitine. Is there a difference?
View Answer
Acytel l-carnitine has been shown in studies to be more effective than
l-carnitine. Here is an excerpt from a page on our site that references
some of the studies:
ALC (acytel l-carnitine), a cousin of L-carnitine, is unique and far more
biochemically powerful than L-carnitine in controlling damage to and
revitalizing the mitochondria. (Pharmacol Res. 1996
Nov-Dec;34(5-6):219-24. J Nutr Biochem. 2006 Feb;17(2):73-88.)
Specifically, ALC is able to enter nerve cells far better than L-carnitine
can, explaining ALC's profound benefits in the brain because it-not
L-carnitine— combines chemically with choline to produce acetylcholine,
a neurotransmitter critical to memory and other mental functioning.
(Altern Med Rev. 1999 Dec;4(6):438-41.)

I have been on SynergySlim for about 4 weeks now and have not lost any weight. Any suggestions?
View Answer
I definitely encourage you to use the product for longer. We normally
suggest giving SynergySlim up to 3 months to allow your body time to
adjust, and to begin feeling the effects of the product. You can also feel
comfortable in knowing that we have a 90-day any reason return policy.
SynergySlim is a safe, all natural weight loss aid. Unlike many other
dieting products, SynergySlim is stimulant-free and will not cause your
heart to race or your blood pressure to rise. SynergySlim was formulated
based on a Georgetown University study by Dr. Harry Preuss. All of the
ingredients in SynergySlim have been used for years singly as weight loss
aids. This is the first time that they have been combined into one
program. The combined effect offers ingredients that work synergistically
to help reduce binge eating, help burn more calories, store less fat in
the body, absorb less carbs, and keep the weight off. It is different than
most diet pills in that it attacks weight loss in four different ways. It
reduces fat, reduces carb absorption, burns fat, and helps to control the
appetite. It is not a quick fix, overnight pill. It addresses weight loss
in a controlled manner, which along with diet and exercise will help you
achieve your results faster, leaving you more likely to retain you
results. Weight gain does not occur overnight, and it is not healthy or
sustainable to lose it overnight. The goal of SynergySlim is to help end
yo-yo dieting, and help you turn the corner to a healthy lifestyle.
SynergySlim also helps you to retain muscle. Often while dieting, and food
intake is reduced, a lot of muscle weight is lost in the process. Muscle
weighs more than fat per volume, and in fact lean muscle helps to burn
more calories throughout the day. It is important to retain muscle while
on a weight loss program and SynergySlim helps to address this common
weight loss issue.
You can read more about SynergySlim in Dr. Preuss’s book “The Fat Loss
Pharmacy” here: http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/detail/NBOOK6
You can also find more information about some of the ingredients in
SynergySlim in some of the articles listed here:

I will have episodes of very low blood pressure. It comes with no rhythm or reason except stress. No one seems too concerned. I think I must be lacking something essential in my diet. Any suggestions at all? I'm 39, workout on trainer weigh 125 lbs give or take 2 lbs either way.
View Answer
Low blood pressure is an issue that is usually ignored for some reason. It
is not as dangerous as high blood pressure, but it is something that can be
uncomfortable.
I am not sure what could be causing your low blood pressure. It is
possible that during excercise, you are sweating and losing electrolytes,
causing your blood pressure to become low. If you think that is the case,
you can try adding just a pinch of a mineralized sea salt (can usually
find in gourmet or health food stores) to either your water or something
you may eat to help raise your blood pressure.
Also, be sure to get plently of water in your diet. You may want to try a
water enhanced with electrolytes. My favorite is Glaceau Smart Water. You
should also be sure to get a balanced healthy diet, including as many
fruits and vegetables a day as you can.
A good addition to your diet would be one of our Multi Vitamin's. You can find them on our website at: http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/category/Multi-Vitamins

Does alpha lipoic acid add to the acidity of the body. I am currently trying to rid my body of excess acids.
View Answer
Alpha Lipoic acid is an acid. However, since the overall acid effect on
the body is very minimal and since it has so many positive effects to
health, it really is not something to be concerned with while trying to
promote alkalinity in the body.
You should consider trying to avoid sugary and starchy foods, as they
produce acid. Also, you may want to add a "green drink," such as wheat
grass, to your diet to help alkalize your system.

I have slight deviated septum on the right side of my nose and it can be extremely annoying by the drainage.Could you suggest which foods might be not so good for someone like myself?
View Answer
You may want to try a low starch, low sugar diet, concentrating mainly on
fresh vegetables and lean proteins to reduce mucus and phlegm. Sugary and
starchy foods tend to produce phlegm. As you know, dairy products produce
mucus, but be sure that your soy milk has no added sugar.
According to Chinese medicine, granny smith apples and jasmine tea help to
clear phlegm. I have tried this myself, and it does seem to be quite
helpful. In general, you can feel which foods add to the condition, if you
train yourself to listen to your body.

Why is sauteeing in a frying pan healthy, but putting the vegetables in a pot in the oil ("deep frying") unhealthy? If you use olive oil for both methods is the "deep frying" still unhealthy? Why? I love potato chips - one of my only vices. What is the chemical produced by deep frying potato chips that is supposed to be cancerous or otherwise dangerous? How serious is this concern?
View Answer
It general, frying is not the healthiest method to cook foods, especially
deep frying. Steaming, baking, boiling and poaching are all better methods
for cooking. When you to do fry, it is much better to sauté foods than it
is to deep fry them. Deep frying uses a higher heat, allowing the oil to
oxidize, making it not healthy. The dioxins are one of the main concerns
with deep frying and eating potato chips. They are pollutants that are
carcinogenic, and for this reason one should avoid consuming deep fried
foods. California is considering the requirement of a warning label for
all deep fried foods. When you sauté, you generally do not use a high
heat, and do not cook the food for too long. It is especially much
healthier than deep frying for cooking vegetables, as usually the
vegetables are still crisp, allowing them to retain more nutrients. Olive
oil is a very healthy oil, but it cannot be used in a deep fryer. It has a
lower smoking point, and cannot be heated to the high temperature that deep
frying takes. Another thing to consider is the types of oils usually used
in deep fryers. A lot of times, shortenings are used in deep fryers, as
they are able to be heated at high temperatures. They contain the
dangerous trans fats that should be avoided.
Green Tea Extract has been shown to help neutralize carcinogens in foods cooked at very high tempatures.

Hyaluronic acid is found in many tissues throughout the body. It is
concentrated in the skin and in cartilage. While it has been proven
effective when administered as an injectable, the research about oral
administration that is available is preliminary. As I have heard many
people getting positive results using this ingredient both topically and
orally, it may be worth a 2-3 month trial to see if you notice any results
from using it. Other more thoroughly studied nutrients that play a role in

Does ground flax seed provide the same omega-3 and DHA as fish oil?
View Answer
There are three main EFAs (essential fatty acids) that belong to the
Omega-3 fatty acid group. ALA (alpha-linoleic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic
acid), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) being the main components. Fish oil
consists of mainly DHA and EPA. Flax seed oil is high in essential fatty
acids, including a good balance of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. The Omega-3
found in flax seed is ALA. DHA and EPA, although they have many health
benefits, are known as being brain food. ALA is said to be converted in
the body into DHA, but it is uncertain exactly how much is converted, and
how it ranges from individuals. So, flax seed oil is not a reliable source
of DHA. There are benefits to taking both flax and fish oil, and many
people take both as part of their regimen. Many of the functions for both
are very similar with subtle differences. Flax seed oil is very good for
helping to balance the EFA ratio in the body. One should have more Omega-3
than 6, while most Americans consume too much Omega-6 in their diet. Fish
oil is considered to be brain nourishing food, since a large portion of
the brain’s composition is DHA.
One thing to remember is that ground flax seed can be treated differently
than even flax seed oil. The ground flax seed will provide you with fiber
that the oil does not. Ground flax also is not as concentrated in EFAs as
just taking the oil itself. There are many people that safely use all
three. Click here for our Omega-T Fish Oil Formula: http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/detail/OMT

What are the best supplements for fibromyalgia?
View Answer
It is important that you get the proper nutrients every day, especially if
you are suffering from fibromyalgia. Our Multi-Nutrient Formulas are high
potency, and will help to rule out any possible nutritional deficiencies.
Be sure to eat a well balanced diet that is low in sugar and processed

CoQ10 is a nutrient that has been shown to be helpful for people with fibromyalgia. It helps lessen fatigue by the body and helps with the utilization of energy. It also enhances the immune system, which is important since fibromyalgia is often paired with a weakened immune system.

I read an article by Jean Carper regarding 5 proven food remedies one being oatmeal. I was wondering if eating Quaker instant weight control oatmeal has the same benefits as non-instant cooked oatmeal. I eat the instant everyday and hope it has the same benefits but would like to know for sure.
View Answer
The oats in instant oatmeal have be processed somewhat into smaller
particles to make it cook more quickly. It contains less fiber than
old-fashioned oatmeal (made with whole oats), so it breaks down into sugar
faster. Instant oatmeal has a glycemic index of 66; old-fashioned oatmeal
has a glycemic index of 49. If you are concerned about raising your blood
sugar, it's better to eat old-fashioned oatmeal.
I have never seen the Quaker weight control oatmeal until today when I got
your message. This product is high in fiber, so it does look like a better
option than most instant oatmeals available. I tend to be more of a fan of
steal cut oats because they are the least processed, however this product
looks like a good option if you are on the go.

When counting carbs, are the carbs consumed from, lets say an apple of equally good or bad value as if you got it from say a slice of whole grain bread?
View Answer
I consider apples to be great snack foods. They contain carbs, but they
also have a lot of fiber and water to help slow down the absorption. I
usually eat them between meals and I throw in a small handful of almonds
or walnuts to help keep my blood sugar even more balanced.
Whole grain breads are better alternatives to white breads because they
contain more fiber. You may even want to try sprouted grain bread that is
higher in nutrients and usually contains even more fiber. You can usually
find this kind of bread in your local health food store. It is important
to remember to consume these foods in moderation.
Apples and grains are really separate foods that I would have a hard time
comparing which one is better. They both serve different purposes in the
diet, and they both contain some of the same, but also some different
nutrients. Dealing with carbohydrates, it is important to remember that
moderation is key.

Tingling sensations on my lower legs (calf) wake me up 2-3 times in the middle of night. But they go away after 10-15 minutes of massaging and stretching. If this sounds like restless leg syndrome, do you have any suggestions as to what to do or take before I seek medical treatment?
View Answer
It does sound like the symptoms of RLS (restless leg syndrome), however it
is a good idea to get diagnosed first before deciding upon treatment.
If you find out you have Restless Leg Syndrome, there are a number of
natural alternatives that you may want to consider. It may be helpful to
take calcium and magnesium supplements at bed time in order to help your
body to relax. If you are taking one of our Multi Nutrient Formulas, it
may be wise to take an extra night time dose of these minerals, not to
exceed 2000mg of calcium and 1000mg of magnesium from all of your
supplements combined. These minerals have been shown to have a calming
rebuilding effect on the muscles and nervous system. You should try to
avoid caffeine, especially any time after lunch time. Also alcohol and
tobacco products can trigger symptoms. RLS has also been connected to high
glycemic diets. It may be best to avoid sugar, and try to keep the blood
sugar balanced. Moderate exercise may relieve symptoms of RLS. Just be
sure not to overdo it, or to exercise too late in the evening, as this
could aggravate the problem. You may also want to try to take a hot bath
at night to help relax your muscles for bed time. Use calming essential
oils, such as lavender, to help calm you even more as you bath. Since
stress can also trigger RLS, this would be a good relaxation method. You
may also want to consider trying a night time yoga video to help relax
your body and mind. There are also many herbal night time teas available.
Check with your local health food store to see which one will work best
with you.

Have studies conclusively proven krill oil supplements to be superior to fish oil supplements as far as ORAC values are concerned? Is the major difference limited to higher antioxidants?
View Answer
Most of the research about krill oil seems to be preliminary. It is high
in Omega-3 fatty acids, and seems to have mostly the same attributes as
fish oil does. There are claims that it is higher in antioxidants than
fish oil. Most of the information that I have seen on krill oil was in the
form of advertisement. Our Omega-T Fish Oil stands out as one of the best fish oils available. It is formulated with pure, potent and fresh, all-natural fish oil that is extremely high in DHA and EPA. It contains molecularly distilled fish body oils from imported Norwegian salmon and is certified to be contaminant-free by independent testing.

What do you think about hyaluronic acid for joint pain & aging skin,is it worth the money?
View Answer
Hyaluronic acid is found in many tissues throughout the body. It is
concentrated in the skin and in cartilage. While it has been proven
effective when administered as an injectable, the research about oral
administration that is available is preliminary. As I have heard many
people getting positive results using this ingredient both topically and
orally, it may be worth a 2-3 month trial to see if you notice any results
from using it.
Other more thoroughly studied nutrients that play a role in maintaining
joint health are glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. They are available in
our Super Osteo-GM and our Osteo-GC formulas. Click here for our Osteo-GM
and Osteo-GC formulas:

MSM is also wonderful for the skin. There are many wonderful cosmetic
body/skin care products available with MSM.

How does the nutritional value of can beans compare to dry beans?
View Answer
It is best to eat dried beans as you can be sure that they do not have
added sodium, preservatives, or anything added that you may not want. That
being said, there is really very little difference in the nutritional value
of canned versus dried beans. They make a great substitute if you don’t
have the time to cook dried beans. Try to read the label and make sure
that they have no added preservatives, and lower salt contents. You can also
try rinsing canned beans to lower the sodium content.

it is very difficult to find chips and crackers made without corn, safflower, or soybean oils.Any ideas where to shop?
View Answer
Most chip and cracker products are made with one of these oils. Chips and
crackers are snacking items that should, regardless of the type of oil,
should not be consumed in excess. They are meant to be enjoyed
occasionally as a snack. There are now potato chips that are made with
olive oil that are very tasty. The brand Terra makes really nice chips
that are a better choice than most snacking items available. Consider shopping at Whole Foods Market or Trader Joes for a great selection of healthy chips and snacks.

What spread product can be purchased that would offer a healthy alternative to butter?
View Answer
My favorite brand for buttery spreads is Earth Balance. (Check out their
products here: http://www.earthbalance.net/product.html) Their products
contain a patented blend of palm fruit oil, a naturally saturated fat, and
soy and canola, both polyunsaturated, designed by nutrition scientists at
Brandeis University to support healthy HDL/LDL levels. They make a product
called Omega PLUS, which contains the addition of omega-3s and a
phytosterol shown to reduce LDL levels. You can usually find these
products at Whole Foods and in some other stores. To maintain the proper
ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s in your diet, try substituting flax oil for
canola or olive sometimes. Flax oil should never be heated, but you can
use it on salads, on vegetables after they have been cooked and in
smoothies. Fatty fish, flax seeds, hemp seeds and walnuts are also all
good sources for omega-3s. Stop Aging Now's Omega-T Fish Oil provides a
daily dose of 840 mg of omega-3 fatty acids. Click here to order Omega-T Fish Oil: http://www.stopagingnow.com/products/detail/OMT

My husband takes your multi vitamins daily which have 200 mg of Selenium. He eats a lot of Brazil nuts. Is he getting too much?
View Answer
That should be fine, as long as he is not eating excessive amounts of
Brazil nuts. Nuts and seed are a great source of essential fatty acids. It
is best to eat them in small amounts; something close to a small handful is
plenty for one serving.

I have been taking the Stop Aging Now for a couple of years and , of course, get 600mg of calcuim in the vitamin, but Dr recommends 1800-2000mg. I take a Viactin chew in the morning, but calcium pills during the day seem to cause gas. Taking a couple of calcium pills before bed seems to work well. Is the absorption as good at this time or is it essential to take them directly before or after meals?
View Answer
The type of calcium in the Viactin chewable calcium is the same type of
calcium that is in our Multi-Nutrient Formulas, calcium carbonate. This
type of calcium is best taken with food as it absorbs better. If you have
to take a calcium supplement at night or on an empty stomach, then you may
want to try a calcium citrate supplement. This type of calcium absorbs
better on an empty stomach.

My doctor prescribed Lipitor but I had muscle weakness, he wants me to try another drug. I'm not supposed to take vitamin E & C with it. Can you tell me why this is? I would like to try your cholesterol support vitamin before trying another drug.
View Answer
I think your doctor is concerned about the increased threat of bleeding when taking anticoagulant drugs.
You should consider natural methods before resorting to a drug that often has many negative side effects. It is often possible to control cholesterol using diet, exercise and proper supplementation. You may want to consider our Multi-Nutrient Formula Plus Cholesterol Support PowerPak. The Cholesterol Support PowerPak will provide you with a solid nutritional base. It helps to support a healthy absorption, breakdown, and production of cholesterol in the body. Also, with the PowerPak, you get the extra support of fish oil, which helps with cardiovascular, | |
