This Formula Is Based on the Latest Anti-Aging Research
Every single active ingredient contained in this formula is backed by multiple clinical research studies. We have done our homework, and we are proud to detail below the clinical research data that supports the inclusion of the major active ingredients in this formula.
Mangosteen
Mangosteen is a dark purple fruit that is grown primarily in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. The hard rind of the fruit can be nearly one inch thick. At the center is the soft opaque white fruit, which resembles a head of garlic but tastes slightly sweet and tart. The rind is especially rich in compounds called xanthones. Laboratory studies suggest xanthones have anti-cancer effects when they are studied in test tubes. Mangosteen has also been found to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiseptic properties in test tube studies.
Japanese scientists demonstrated that six xanthones contained in mangosteen all displayed growth inhibitory effects on human leukemia cell lines. A more recent study showed that alpha-mangostin, one of the xanthones found in mangosteen, would be a good candidate for the prevention and treatment of cancer. (J Asian Nat Prod Res. 2008 May;10(5):481-5.)
Evidence suggests that mangosteen may offer significant protection against a host of microbial compounds that include a variety of bacteria and viruses. Japanese researchers found that alpha-mangostin from mangosteen fruit showed strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (staph), the "superbug" with strains that have become resistant to many commonly-used antibiotics such as penicillin, flucloxacillin, oxacillin and even vancomycin. The scientists suggested that alpha-mangostin could find wide pharmaceutical use in the future.
Gamma-mangostin, a xanthone found in mangosteen fruit has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects. Japanese scientists at Tohoku University found that gamma-mangostin has potent anti-inflammatory effects on the brain's structural cells and suggested that it has the potential in helping with inflammatory conditions of the brain. A follow up study concluded that gamma-mangostin could prove to be a useful compound in the development of anti-inflammatory drugs.
Açai Berry
Açai berries are considered to have one of the highest antioxidant contents compared to any other fruit on the earth. It is because of açai’s powerful antioxidant levels that it is considered a potent anti-aging berry.
In 2006, a study performed at the University of Florida showed that açai fractions containing polyphenolics could reduce proliferation of HL-60 leukemia cells in vitro. This was most likely due to increased rapid cell death (apoptosis) as fractions were also found to activate caspase-3 (an enzyme important in apoptosis) which was inversely correlated to cell death. (Del Pozo-Insfran D et al., J Agric Food Chem. 2006 Feb 22;54(4):1222-9.)
A recent report using a standardized oxygen radical absorbance capacity or ORAC analysis on a freeze-dried açai powder found that this powder showed a high antioxidant effect against a free radical known as peroxyl radical. Its antioxidant activity is approximately 10% more than lowbush blueberry or cranberry on a dry weight basis. (Schauss AG et al. J Agric Food Chem. 2006 Nov 1;54(22):8604-10.)
Pomegranate
Pomegranates are ruby-red fruits that are native to Persia and the Himalayan area of northern India. They are now being cultivated in many countries around the world, but prefer a drier climate. Pomegranates are becoming ever popular in the west and are being claimed as a super fruit because of their high antioxidant activity. The health claims of pomegranates are not new. Ancient lore says this power packed fruit was favored by the gods, and modern science is starting to show why.
Pomegranates contain three different types of polyphenols — tannins, anthocyanins and ellagic acid. Laboratory studies of pomegranate extract show a protective effect against cancers of the breast, colon, lung, prostate and skin, as well as against liver disease, obesity and even dental plaque.
In a recent study, researchers showed that pomegranate extract inhibits cell growth of highly aggressive prostate cancer cells. Further, they showed that long-term consumption of pomegranate extract significantly inhibited tumor growth. (A. Malik and H. Mukhtar. Cell Cycle. 2006 Feb;5(4):371-3.)
According to preliminary scientific data based on laboratory research and human pilot studies, juice of pomegranate has been found to possibly be effective in reducing heart disease risk factors, including LDL oxidation, macrophage oxidative status, and foam cell formation, all of which can contribute to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.
In one study, pomegranate extract was shown to reduce the progression of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Researchers concluded that long-term use of pomegranate extract may keep blood vessels supple. (F. de Nigris et al. Cardiovasc Res. 2007 Jan 15;73(2):414-23.)
Heart specialist Dean Ornish says blood flow to the heart improved 17% in men and women with coronary heart disease who drank 8.5 ounces of pomegranate juice a day for three months. Blood flow decreased 18% in patients who took placebos; this was a normal progression of their heart disease. The study was done at Ornish's Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, Calif.
In new Israeli studies, patients who drank 1 cup of pomegranate juice daily for a year had 21% lower systolic blood pressure and, more remarkably, 30% less plaque buildup in carotid (neck) arteries. In patients not getting juice, plaque rose 9%. At the University of Wisconsin, antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract showed that it may inhibit changes in human cells exposed to UV light.
VitaBerry®
VitaBerry is a powerful antioxidant blend of berry extracts, providing the concentrated benefits of wild blueberry, cranberry, raspberry, strawberry, prune, tart cherry, bilberry and grape. The polyphenols anthocyanidins, vitamin C and other organic acids naturally present in these fruits effectively combat the oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals. Berry extracts have been extensively studied for their role in optimal health, supporting a healthy cardiovascular and immune system.
One of the most researched of all the berries is the blueberry. Researchers have shown in multiple studies that the antioxidants compounds in blueberries anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, flavonols and tannins slow down the development of cancer cell development in vitro.
It has been reported that blueberries, along with similar fruits including cranberries, may slow down the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions of aging.
Raspberry
Fragrantly sweet with a subtly tart overtone and almost-melt-in-your-mouth texture, raspberries are wonderfully delicious and are usually in limited supply. Most varieties are grown in California from June through October.
Raspberries are rich in ellagic acid and help prevent unwanted damage to cell membranes and other structures in the body by neutralizing free radicals. Ellagic acid has been shown to exhibit anti-carcinogenic activity for a variety of cancers. (J Nutr Biochem. 2004 Nov;15(11):672-8.) Ellagic acid is not the only well-researched phytonutrient component of raspberry, however. Raspberry's flavonoid content is also well documented. Here the key substances are quercetin, kaempferol and the cyanidin-based molecules called cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. These flavonoid molecules are also classified as anthocyanins, and they belong to the group of substances that give raspberries their rich red color. Raspberries' anthocyanins also give these delectable berries unique antioxidant properties.
Goji berry
Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are bright orange-red berries native to southeastern Europe and Southwest Asia. Goji berries have long been an important part of Chinese medicine, and have been used for enhancing the immune system, protecting the liver, improving eyesight, and improving circulation, to name a few. They are perhaps, best known for their high antioxidant activity. Goji berries are now becoming increasingly popular in the west, as the secrets to its wonderful health benefits are being uncovered.
There have been several published studies that note goji berries may indeed have a number of possible medicinal benefits. They are finding that the high antioxidant count may be the reason for the health benefits beginning to be uncovered. Studies are showing that goji berries may provide potential benefits against inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases, and vision-related diseases.
Antioxidants can do more than just fight off harmful free radicals. New research shows that antioxidant compounds called flavonoids and phenolic acids influence fat cells in a way that can help you stay slim and reduce your risk for metabolic syndrome, a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
Fat cells exposed to these antioxidants had lower levels of an enzyme that forms triglycerides, the body’s main form of storage fat. The fat cells also accumulated lower levels of triglycerides. This means that these antioxidants help you store less fat while lowering triglycerides levels, a major risk factor for heart disease and diabetes.
Flavonoids and phenolic acids are found in large amounts in fruits, vegetables, nuts and plant-based drinks like tea, wine and coffee. They are also found in supplements such as quercetin and extracts of green tea, goji berry, acai berry, blueberry, cranberry and pomegranate. (Hsu, C. J Agric and Food Chem. 2007; 55:8404-8410.)
Noni
Noni, known scientifically as Morinda citrifolia, is a tropical fruit found primarily in the South Pacific. About the size of a potato, noni can vary in color from white to yellow to green. Tahitians have used noni for centuries because of its healthful benefits, and modern science is now helping define those benefits.
Over the last two decades, a growing number of people have become interested in the medicinal uses of noni juice. Noni has been used in folk remedies by Polynesians for over 2000 years, and is reported to have a broad range of therapeutic effects, including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antitumor, antihelminth, analgesic, hypotensive, anti-inflammatory and immune enhancing effects. Noni juice is also promoted to enhance energy and wellbeing. Does modern noni research support these claims?
Noni has been documented to contain a mixture of anthraquinones, organic acids, xeronine, several vitamins (such as beta-carotene, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine), some minerals, iron and calcium. The potassium content of noni is similar to that in tomato juice and orange juice.
Xeronine is an alkaloid which is important for proper cell function. It is usually supplied to the body as the precursor "pro-xeronine," which is converted to xeronine in the intestines. It is believed to regulate the function of specific proteins, affecting a wide range of physiological reactions, including repair to damaged cells; enhanced host immune system involving macrophages and/or lymphocytes. (Proc West Pharmacol Soc. 1994. 37: 145-146.)
