Resveratrol is a powerful naturally occurring antioxidant substance found in high concentrations in plants like grapes, peanuts and Japanese knotweed. These plants produce resveratrol when they are under stress to protect themselves from its damaging effects. Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant. It is the antioxidant that red wine is so popular for. It can be found in red grape skins, purple grape juice, mulberries and in smaller quantities it, can be found in peanuts. The plant with the highest concentration of resveratrol is Japenese knotweed, which has been used for centuries in traditional Eastern medicine.

In studies, resveratrol has been shown to protect against cancer, heart disease, and viruses. It has also been shown in several studies to extend lifespan. (Pirola L, Fröjdö S. Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently reported in the journal Carcinogenesis that resveratrol reduces the growth of prostate cancer in mice. They added powdered resveratrol — the human equivalent to the amount contained in a bottle of red wine — to the daily diets of a group of male mice that were genetically modified to develop prostate cancer. Starting at five weeks of age, the mice were given the resveratrol-rich diets. When they were seven months old, the resveratrol-fed animals had an 87% decrease in the risk of developing prostate tumors compared to the ones who weren’t. Of the animals who actually developed prostate cancer, their chance of experiencing a reduction in tumor growth was 48% compared with those not given the antioxidant.

This is in line with an earlier study done by University of Alabama researchers that found resveratrol reduced breast cancer risk in mice. More recently, researchers concluded in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry that resveratrol could function as a chemotherapeutic and therapeutic agent to prevent and suppress the spread of human breast cancer cells after they studied the effects of the antioxidant on the activity of three different proteins that are involved in the proliferation of breast cancer: HER-2, HRG-Beta-1 and MMP-9. Specifically, they found that resveratrol stopped activity of MMP-9 through the HER-2 protein, an action that is crucial for maintaining the health of breast cells. They also found that resveratrol inhibited the invasion of breast cells by cancer in the presence of HRG-Beta-1.

A study showed that low doses of resveratrol affects age-related gene expression changes in heart tissue. Like calorie restriction, it switches the body’s biochemical pathways away from fertility and toward tissue maintenance, which confers an advantage during stressful times. (Resveratrol is produced in plants when they are under stress.) The enhanced tissue maintenance has been found to extend life by cutting down on the degenerative diseases of aging. Indeed, other research has found resveratrol to inhibit cancer and help prevent heart disease. (Barger, JL et al. PLoS ONE. 3(6): e2264.)

ActiVin®

ActiVin®, a patented, highly researched grape seed extract, is an excellent source of antioxidants called OPC’s (oligomeric proanthocyanidins). These antioxidants are considered the magic disease-fighters in red wine. In fact, 50 mg of ActiVin, is said to provide the antioxidant equivalent of four glasses of zinfandel.

As the Environmental Nutrition newsletter notes, ActiVin is the most researched of all grape seed extracts, and other grape seed extracts may not equal ActiVin. The newsletter also reports, “Researchers believe the unique profile of the OPC’s in ActiVin may help protect against heart disease by lowering cholesterol, keeping blood pressure in check and perhaps through anti-inflammatory action.”

The Journal of Medicine published a preliminary study conducted on 40 adults. It found that ActiVin and chromium together lowered total cholesterol by 16.5% and LDL’s (“bad” low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) by 20%. (J Med. 2000;31(5-6):227-46.)

Extracts from the skin surrounding the seeds of red grapes contain proanthocyanidins, one of the most beneficial groups of plant flavonoids. These powerful antioxidants have been shown to have up to 50 times the free radical fighting activity of vitamins C and E. Proanthocyanidins are particularly effective at fighting against free radicals because their chemical structure allows them to be incorporated into cell membranes in the body and to protect the cell from damage by both fat- and water-soluble free radicals. These antioxidants are thought to offer protection against heart disease, cancer, accelerated aging and other diseases linked to oxidative damage.

Several studies have indicated that heart disease is less frequent in people who consume higher levels of dietary flavonoids. (Mutat Res. 2003 Feb-Mar;523-524:87-97. Grape seed extract has also been shown to prevent cholesterol accumulation on artierial wall and reduce one's risk of atherosclerosis. (Int J Clin Pract. 2006 Nov;60(11):1484-92.)

The polyphenols in grape seed extract have also been known to protect the immune system by protecting the lymphocytes from oxidative stress. (Planta Med. 2008 Jun;74(7):730-5. Epub 2008 May 21.)
