Product Overview

Lutein is a unique member of the carotenoids family of antioxidant pigments and is classed as a powerful xanthophyll. Xanthophylls, such as lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin are found in most plants and are partly responsible for many of the colors in plant foods, such as the green in leafy green vegetables and the yellow in egg yolks. Lutein and zeaxanthin have been long used as natural colorants due to their prominent orange-red color however, since they absorb blue light, they can often times appear yellow.

Blue light waves are thought to be particularly dangerous to eye health because they cause a photochemical reaction in the eye that increases free radicals that can damage the macula. While your eyes contain mechanisms to try to prevent this, as we age, our eyes become more susceptible to blue light damage due to reduced pigment protection. Research indicates, however, that oral consumption of the antioxidant pigments lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin can help prevent this damage and offer continued protection for your eyes.

Lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin pigments have special antioxidant capabilities that are especially powerful. Lutein, along with its sister compound, zeaxanthin, are known to have a special ability to protect the eye by absorbing damaging blue and near-ultraviolet lights while cryptoxanthin is similar in structure to beta-carotene and is also known as a pro-vitamin A.

By helping to absorb blue light, these unique antioxidant compounds are able to protect the macula lutea in a way that no other antioxidant compounds can.
