Dimethylaminoethanol, or DMAE, is an organic compound that is the precursor for choline and acetylcholine, two compounds in the brain associated with cognitive function. DMAE is produced by the brain; however, it is produced in very small amounts.

Scientist believe that DMAE may play a very special role in protecting cognitive function since it helps the brain stimulate neural activity and produce acetylcholine. Deficiencies in acetylcholine are often associated with memory loss and it is thought that adequate DMAE levels in the brain may protect it from this threat.
